Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Has ‘Considered’ Moving Will Smith Down in Lineup, Unlikely to Do It

Despite Will Smith's recent struggles, Dave Roberts is unlikely to move him down in the lineup.

Since August 1st, Will Smith has struggled offensively. Playing with a broken rib for most of the season apparently has taken much out of Smith. Many people think Dave Roberts should move Smith down in the lineup. Before Wednesday’s game, Roberts addressed the media on this subject.

“I have considered it,” Roberts said. “I don’t necessarily feel that flipping them or moving Will down, I don’t know if that would be the answer to producing more runs. I think that if you look at our offense, we’re very productive. And I still believe Will is a productive offense player.”

Many members of the media think J.D. Martinez should be moved up to help the Los Angeles Dodgers produce more runs. Roberts disagrees with this because Martinez lengthens the lineup. Martinez usually delivers with two outs, and this is crucial, particularly in the postseason.

Yes, seeing Smith making an almost guaranteed out with either or both Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman on base is frustrating. However, if Max Muncy and/or Martinez can deliver a hit, the Dodgers can win with a slumping Smith in the third spot in the lineup.

In 2023, the Dodgers have arguably the best offense in their history. Worrying about whether they will score enough in the playoffs isn’t productive. Roberts should keep the same lineup as he used in the regular season throughout the playoffs.

Roberts said about Smith, “I have thought about it but I still don’t believe that is the answer.”

No one can predict how the Dodgers will perform in the NLDS. But a strong Smith would definitely help.
