Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Says LA Will Target Another Right-Handed Bat Before Trade Deadline

With Chris Taylor sidelined until at least after the All-Star break, the Dodgers could seek someone to fill in.

Before the Dodgers' game against Pittsburgh before hosting the Angels this weekend, manager Dave Roberts gave an update on how LA is approaching the trade deadline.

With utility man Chris Taylor out until after the All-Star break with a sore right knee, the Dodgers are in need of another right-handed batter — especially if the 32-year-old's knee continues to give him trouble in the second half of the season.

While finding another strong starting pitcher to add to what has become a depleted five-man rotation is certainly a priority, Roberts confirmed that a substitute for Taylor was among the Dodgers' goals by the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

"I think with the uncertainty of Chris Taylor, where he's at, I think a right-handed bat makes sense," Roberts said.

As far as who the Dodgers might target in trade talks with other teams, the options are endless. Taylor is batting just over .200 with 11 home runs this season and can play shortstop or in the outfield. Tim Anderson is likely to be traded from the White Sox, but his numbers don't exactly jump off the page if the Dodgers are looking for a powerful bat. Additionally, Miguel Rojas is playing good baseball at the shortstop position, especially on defense.

Tommy Edman of the St. Louis Cardinals is another intriguing option, although he is going to miss at least a game with a non-serious wrist injury. Capable of playing second base, shortstop or centerfield, Edman offers a similar versatility to Taylor and is hitting .237 with 7 home runs.

The Dodgers will likely have to part ways with some coveted pitching prospects to get the hot bat that they need. But if they are able to acquire a strong starting pitcher as they desire, perhaps sacrificing some prospects will come easier.
