Dodgers To Trade Manuel Margot to Twins, Here's What It Could Mean

There are two clear possibilities.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly agreed to trade outfielder Manuel Margot to the Minnesota Twins. They are receiving shortstop prospect Noah Miller in return, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The Dodgers acquired Margot in the trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow, and are now shipping him just a few months later.

Why?

There are a few reasons the Dodgers could be making this move.

Aside from the fact that they may love the return they are getting — the No. 36 overall pick in the 2021 draft — they are also clearing a spot on the active roster.

That spot could be used a few different ways.

1. Miguel Vargas

Vargas is transitioning to the outfield this offseason, and has impressed in his first two games of spring. The Dodgers could be very high on his upside, and may want to give him an opportunity to make the Opening Day roster.

With the way the roster stands right now without Margot, Vargas is likely the 26th man on the roster.

2. Kiké Hernández

Hernández remains a free agent at this point in the offseason, and was reportedly expected to make his decision by Monday. The Dodgers didn't have room on the active roster for him early Monday morning — now they do.

If the Dodgers wanted to bring Hernández back as a utility option off the bench, they now have the ability to do it and give him a spot on both the 40-man and 26-man roster.
