Shohei Ohtani Surprised Dodgers With Marriage Announcement
Shohei Ohtani shocked the world when he announced late Wednesday night on Instagram that he was married.
"Not only have I began a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have began a new life with someone from my Native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married ."
On Thursday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed even he didn't know about Ohtani's marriage.
“I’m very happy for him and his bride," Roberts said to reporters. "As far as wedding gifts, we got surprised and didn’t have much time to think about it. I’m sure it’s en route.”
The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reported on Thursday that the news "caught Dodgers officials by surprise." Clearly, it did.
Ohtani has always been a very private person, and this was something he's kept to himself for the last few years. His former teammate and close friend with the Angels, Mike Trout, said he didn't even know Ohtani had a girlfriend.
On Thursday, Ohtani explained why he decided to announce it at this time, and gave out a little information regarding his wife.
Ohtani's teammates will have to work fast to get him his Wedding gifts. As for Ohtani, he wanted to get this potential distraction out of the way now so he could focus on baseball.
Ohtani is back in the lineup for his second Cactus League game on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians.
