New York Mets 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Alex Ramirez

Alex Ramirez is just 20 years old but he's already moving up the New York Mets' organizational ladder.

InsideTheMets.com will review each of the New York Mets’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.

No. 11: OF Alex Ramirez, Brooklyn Cyclones (High Class-A)

Statistics for 2023: (120 games): .221/.310/.317/.627 with 66 runs, 21 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 53 RBI, 56 walks, 114 strikeouts, 21 stolen bases.

Season Transactions: Ramirez was invited to Major League Spring Training in February and spent the entire season with Brooklyn.

Season Summary: The invitation to Major League Spring Training was on the strength of a solid 2022. But his numbers regressed at the plate in 2023, as his average dropped by 60 points and his power numbers went down as well. He drew more walks and had fewer strikeouts, but the spread between the two didn’t change much from 2022.

Path Through the Organization: The Mets forked over $2.05 million in international bonus money to sign Ramirez, who in 2019 was MLB Pipeline’s No. 26 international prospect. The Mets didn’t get a true look at him on the field until 2021 at Single-A St. Lucie. The Mets sent him back to the Florida State League in 2022 and he batted .284 there, which helped him get a promotion to Brooklyn by the end of last season.

What’s next: MLB.com scouts use the word “toolsy” to describe the potential center fielder. He has the speed and range to patrol center field, solid arm strength to change positions if needed and is cutting down on strikeouts at the plate. He’s not showing power as a hitter yet, but he has the makeup to change that. He’s closing in on being eligible for the Rule V Draft, so the Mets may have to make a decision on what to do with him soon. A shot at Double-A Binghamton in 2024 should be on the radar.
