New York Mets 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Christian Scott

Christian Scott, the former Florida Gator, made huge progress in 2023 as he set career-highs in several categories.

InsideTheMets.com will review each of the New York Mets’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.

No. 12: RHP Christian Scott, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A), Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A), St. Lucie Mets (Class-A)

Statistics for 2023: (19 games, all starts): 5-4, 2.57 ERA, 87.2 innings, 63 hits, 25 runs (earned), five home runs, 12 walks, 107 strikeouts, .199 opponent batting average, 0.86 WHIP.

Season Transactions: Scott started the season on Brooklyn’s 7-day injured list. Brooklyn sent him to St. Lucie for a rehab assignment on May 3 and he was sent back to Brooklyn on May 5 and activated from the injured list. He was promoted to Binghamton on June 12. Binghamton placed him on the 7-day injured list on Aug. 17 and he was activated on Sept. 6.

Season Summary: This was a breakthrough season for Scott, who started the season on the injured list but made up for it throughout the season. He set career-highs in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. But dig inside the numbers and you see a pitcher with an insane strikeout-to-walk ratio (107-to-12) and one who led hitters to a .199 batting average. He also only allowed five home runs in 1,304 pitches.

Path Through the Organization: It’s hard to break into the starting rotation at the University of Florida, and Scott found that out while he was with the Gators. As a reliever, though, his stuff still got attention and the Mets drafted him in the fifth round in 2021 and signed him for $350,000. In 2022 he did his first full season of pro ball at Single-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn, where he put up a 4.45 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. He also pitched in the Arizona Fall League, but didn’t exactly post breakout numbers there.

What’s next: He has two quality pitches, per MLB.com scouts. His fastball can hit 96 miles per hour and has swing-and-miss stuff. His slider is modeled after Max Scherzer’s and it does damage against right-handed hitting. The difference between being a starter and reliever for Scott will be whether he can develop a third pitch. Right now he has a change-up but it’s not MLB quality. Scott looks like a bet to start 2024 at Binghamton as he tries to master that third pitch and get a promotion to Syracuse.
