New York Mets 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Jacob Reimer

The New York Mets took Jacob Reimer out of high school in the summer of 2022 and he's already played at three levels of the organization.

InsideTheMets.com will review each of the New York Mets’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.

No. 13: 3B Jacob Reimer, Brooklyn Cyclones (High Class-A), St. Lucie Mets (Class-A), Florida Complex League Mets (Rookie)

Statistics for 2023: (102 games at three affiliates) .265/.399/.375/.774 with 63 runs, 13 doubles, eight home runs, 49 RBI, 62 walks, 84 strikeouts, three stolen bases.

Season Transactions: Reimer started the season with St. Lucie. On June 24 he was moved to St. Lucie’s 7-day injured list. On July 4 he was sent to the FCL Mets for a rehab assignment. On July 31 he was promoted to Brooklyn. On Aug. 25 he was placed on Brooklyn’s 7-day injured list. On Sept. 3 he was activated from the injured list.

Season Summary: This was Reimer’s first full season in the minor leagues had he showed plenty of promise at the plate. The power numbers aren’t quite what you want from a potential third baseman, but his walk and strikeouts rate was nearly equal and got on nearly four out of 10 plate appearances and scored a lot of runs. The Mets drafted him out of high school, so the fact that he’s at High-A at age 19 is good progress.

Road Through the Organization: When a high school or prep academy produces a MLB player, scouts tend to go back for seconds. Reimer benefited from that history at Yucaipa (Calif.) High School, which has produced Mark Teahen, Matt Davidson and Taijuan Walker. The Mets drafted him in the fourth round in 2022 and signed him for $775,000, well over slot for that selection. He turned around solid numbers in the Florida Complex League after his selection, including an enviable stat for a young hitter — double the walks over strikeouts at the plate.

What’s next: The Mets are eyeing him as a potential third baseman down the line. Scouts didn’t believe he had the makeup to remain at shortstop, which is where he played in high school. Defense is the area the Mets want to see improvement from him, as he’s already displayed a competent bat. Good offense will get you moved up the ladder, but good or better defense will get you in the Major Leagues. The Mets have a couple of answers at third base for now, so they can afford to be patient with Reimer. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him start at Brooklyn in 2024, but get promoted quickly if his bat continues to progress.
