New York Mets 2023 Top 30 Prospect Wraps: Justin Jarvis

A recent New York Mets prospect, Justin Jarvis needs to show the organization more consistency before he can join the Majors.

InsideTheMets.com will review each of the New York Mets’ Top 30 prospects, as ranked by MLB.com at the end of the 2023 season.

No. 15: RHP Justin Jarvis, Syracuse Mets (Triple-A), Nashville Sounds (Triple-A, Milwaukee), Biloxi Shuckers (Double-A, Milwaukee)

Statistics for 2023: (26 games, all starts) 6-11, 5.31 ERA, 118.2 innings, 129 hits allowed, 80 runs (70 earned), 20 home runs, 60 walks, 138 strikeouts, .272 opponent batting average, 1.59 WHIP.

With Syracuse (nine games) 0-5, 8.04, 31.1 innings, 43 hits allowed, 33 runs (28 earned), eight home runs, 22 walks, 36 strikeouts, .309 opponent batting average, 2.07 WHIP.

Season Transactions: Started season with Biloxi. Promoted to Nashville on June 30. Traded to Mets for OF Mark Canha on July 31. Assigned to Syracuse on Aug. 1. Activated on Aug. 6.

Season Summary: He looked good at Biloxi, where he went 6-4 with a 3.33 ERA. But, after a promotion to Nashville — and then the trade to the Mets and assignment to Syracuse — he just seemed to lose it. His numbers with the Mets were the worst of his three assignments, and the .309 opponent batting average is not a good look for a player that has been a part of pro baseball since 2018.

Road Through the Organization: At one time he was MLB Pipeline’s No. 199 Draft prospect in 2018 and the Brewers took him in the fifth round out of Lake Norman High School in Mooresville, N.C. He’s progressed through the Brewers’ system steadily since, and the promotion to Nashville was a reward for his strong start with Biloxi earlier this season. The Mets took Jarvis as the prize for trading Canha to a playoff-bound Brewers team.

What’s next: That was not an impressive start to his Mets career, but he remains a Top 30 prospect because MLB.com scouts see a starter with a high arm slot and four-pitch repertoire, each of which has solid traits. With four pitches, he projects as a potential starter or long reliever at the Major League level. But he’s developed a penchant for allowing home runs and hitters at the Triple-A level hammered him in 2023. The Mets will likely send him back to Syracuse to see if he can tame those issues before considering calling him up to Queens.
