Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Suárez Struggles in First Outing with Venezuela

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitching Ranger Suárez made his spring debut for Team Venezuela against the Houston Astros as they prepare for group stage play in the World Baseball Classic.

Philadelphia Phillies' starting pitcher Ranger Suárez made his spring debut in the World Baseball Classic with Venezuela today against the Houston Astros in an exhibition game. Suárez, after a great season with the Phillies last year, struggled in his first outing of the spring.

Suarez went just 1.2 innings, giving up a run, with three strikeouts and two walks. Though on paper, three strikeouts in 1.2 innings is quite impressive, it doesn't tell the full story.

He gave up three hits, including a double to Mauricio Dubon, his first of two hits in the first two innings. He also gave up a hit to Joe Perez in the second inning.

The lefty was then pulled from the game in the second inning.

Despite a sloppy performance, it shouldn't be cause for much concern. A performance like this isn't out of the ordinary, and it's Suarez's first outing since the 2022 World Series, also against the Astros.
