Dombrowski Admits Philadelphia Phillies Looked at Pursuing Luke Voit

The Philadelphia Phillies did in fact look at pursuing the acquisition of Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Luke Voit.

Dave Dombrowski admitted that it was worth a look.

Ultimately, the Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations decided against signing Luke Voit to help fill the gap of Rhys Hoskins being lost for the season with a torn ACL.

Hoskins will undergo surgery Thursday in Fort Worth, Tex.

The 32-year-old Voit had opted out of his minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Even though Voit hit just .226 last season, he ripped 22 home runs for the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres.

Darick Hall will receive plenty of playing time in place of Hoskins at first base. When Alec Bohm shifts from third to first, Edmundo Sosa will step in at third.

“His name came up,” Dombrowski said of Voit. “We decided the way we’re situated, we’d rather create more playing time for Sosa. We think our defense becomes much better.”

Sosa hit .364 with four home runs in spring training.

Voit signed a one-year deal to play this season with the Brewers.

One thing about Dombrowski – he’s always looking to add talent. Just when we all thought the roster was stocked, Dombrowski surprised everyone with a one-year, $2 million deal for Josh Harrison.

Checking out Voit was worth it even if he signed elsewhere.
