Tigers Add Former Philadelphia Phillies Catcher on Minor League Deal

The Detroit Tigers have added former Philadelphia Phillies catcher Andrew Knapp on a minor league deal.

The Detroit Tigers have reportedly added a familiar face to Philadelphia Phillies fans.

Andrew Knapp, formerly a backup catcher to J.T. Realmuto, will report on a minor league deal with a chance to attend spring training and ultimately land on the roster.

Knapp has played 325 career games over six seasons in Major League Baseball.

Knapp was the No. 53 overall pick in the 2013 draft by the Phillies.

Now 31, Knapp owns a career average of .209 with 13 home runs. He played for the Phillies from 2017-21 and has since been part of the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants.

It’s a low risk type of move for the Tigers.

Knapp will never become an All-Star, but he’s a good defensive catcher and a solid presence in the clubhouse.

Why not bring him in?

If the Tigers wind up releasing Knapp, it’s not going to be a big deal. He’ll likely land elsewhere.
