Philadelphia Phillies Linked to Standout Pitcher in Latest Mock Draft

The Philadelphia Phillies have the No. 27 overall pick in July's draft and they could use that selection to bolster their pitching depth.

The Philadelphia Phillies have the No. 27 overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft and The Athletic recently published its first mock draft leading up to July’s three-day event.

The MLB Draft will be July 9-11 in Seattle, which will also host the MLB All-Star Game and the MLB Futures Game.

With the No. 27 overall pick, The Athletic projected the Phillies would take Florida pitcher Brandon Sproat.

Sproat entered this week’s SEC Tournament with a 7-3 record and a 4.85 ERA. He had an 18-8 record in college baseball.

Sproat was selected an All-SEC Second Team selection this season. Previously, he was selected to the 2022 Southeast-ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-Region, the 2022 NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team and the 2021 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

The first five picks in the mock draft included LSU outfielder Dylan Crews (No. 1, Pittsburgh Pirates), LSU pitcher Paul Skenes (No. 2, Washington Nationals), Franklin (Ind.) Community High outfielder Max Clark (No. 3, Detroit Tigers), South Brunswick High (Southport, N.C). outfielder Walker Jenkins (No. 4, Texas Rangers) and Florida outfielder Wyatt Langford (No. 5, Minnesota Twins).

The Phillies’ last five first-round pick included outfielder Justin Crawford (No. 16 overall, 2022), right-handed pitcher Andrew Painter (No. 12 overall, 2021), right-handed pitcher Mick Abel (No. 15 overall, 2020), shortstop Bryson Stott (No. 14 overall, 2019) and third baseman Alec Bohm (No. 3 overall, 2018).
