Philadelphia Phillies Impressed With New Superstar During Spring Training

The Philadelphia Phillies franchise is already impressed by the performance of their new superstar just four games into the spring campaign.

On December 8, 2022, the Philadelphia Phillies finalized one of the biggest deals in franchise history. Signing Trea Turner to a 11-year, $300 million contract unleashed a wave of optimism across the entire Phillies fanbase.

MLB.com's recent list has the shortstop ranked as the 11th best player in the league.

However, nothing's ever set in stone; take Nick Castellanos, for example.

Turner made his Spring Training debut on Sunday, slotting into the leadoff spot for the first time in his Phillies career. Just two games in, the superstar is already turning some heads down in Clearwater, Fla.

Getting it done

In the major sports leagues there will be instances in which players have one good season, sign a massive contract, and have a significant decrease in production. Luckily for Phillies fans, Turner has proven his value in the MLB numerous times for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals. Just ask his former - now reunited - teammate, Bryce Harper.

In his first game with Philadelphia, Turner put on display what he does best. He notched two hits, an RBI, and stole a bag.

That sequence displays how well Turner will fit in the leadoff spot with the Phillies. Kyle Schwarber, being a power hitter, is more of a "true three outcomes" prototype. With his .218 BA and National League-leading 46 home runs, Schwarber essentially hit a home run, struck out, or walked.

Even in instances when Schwarber did get on base, he's not a renown speedster on the base paths. Turner gives a spark at the leadoff spot, keeping the defense on their toes as hitters such as Schwarber, Harper, or Realmuto step up to the plate.

Naturally, his elite speed and on-base skills make him perfectly suited for the role.

Turner's production with Philadelphia thus far has been phenomenal as he's started spring training going 4-6 from the plate, with three RBI's and a stolen base.

It goes without saying that his new franchise and teammates are already more than impressed with the new star.
