Cincinnati Reds Reliever Ian Gibaut Has Successful Rehab Appearance With Dayton Dragons
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ian Gibaut worked his first rehab appearance for the Dayton Dragons on Friday night.
Coming back from a pronator strain in his right forearm, Gibaut pitched one scoreless inning. He gave up a single, one walk, and had three strikeouts. He used his full arsenal of pitches, getting one strikeout with his cutter, one with his four-seam fastball and one with his slider.
“I felt healthy, felt good, felt strong. Now it’s on to the next one,” Gibaut said. “I’ll pitch again on Sunday.”
The Dragons head out on a road trip after Sunday’s game, so Gibaut’s rehab will shift to Louisville. He will need to pitch in back-to-back days there, and feel good, before the Reds will look to activate him.
“I feel ready to go and healthy," he said. "I just need to knock out a few more of these rehab outings and get back up there (to Cincinnati).”
When Gibaut is ready to go, Nick Krall will have an interesting decision to make. The bullpen is already loaded, Sam Moll is on his way back, and so is Nick Lodolo. Oh, by the way, Gibaut does not have options, so if the Reds do not add him to the MLB roster, they must put him on waivers.
“Just want to get out there and put up some zeroes and let the lineup score some runs," Gibaut said.
The past two seasons, Gibaut set career-highs in appearances. He pitched so much last year that he led the team in appearances. If anything that propelled him into camp, this year.
“I actually felt better coming into camp this year than I did the previous year. I don’t know, man. It was just a freak thing," he said. "I actually was pitching live BP back home (in Houston) and felt great in it. Woke up the next morning feeling super tight. Got worked on back at home and ended up having a muscle strain. Took some time off and now it feels good.”
