San Antonio Spurs Throttled by Oklahoma City Thunder as Victor Wembanyama Sits

The San Antonio Spurs were blown out by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday without Victor Wembanyama.

Coming off their win over the injury-depleted Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, the San Antonio Spurs had to turn around and face arguably the best team in the West in the second night of a back-to-back.

But without star rookie Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs found themselves on the wrong end of a huge blowout.

The Oklahoma City Thunder jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, leading by as many as 42 in a 127-89 win over the Spurs at Paycom Center on Wednesday.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 26 points and six rebounds while Josh Giddey flirted with a triple-double after finishing with 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Thunder veteran Gordon Hayward tallied 18 points off the bench, as many of OKC's reserves got tons of action due to the blowout.

With Wemby out, Spurs forward Zach Collins finished with a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds while Tre Jones added 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists. After scoring a career-high 10 points against Memphis on Tuesday, Spurs rookie second-round draft pick Sidy Cissoko topped that total quickly with 14 points against the Thunder in 28 minutes off the bench.

Collins had 11 of San Antonio’s first 17 points, but the Spurs fell into a 38-17 hole before the nine-minute mark of the second quarter behind an early scoring barrage from Giddey and Gilgeous-Alexander. The Spurs ended the first quarter with six-minute scoring drought.

From here, the Thunder slowly built its lead up to 35 in the second quarter before heading into halftime up 68-35.

The game marked San Antonio's final road contest of the season. The Spurs will host the Denver Nuggets on Friday before closing out the regular season Sunday against the Detroit Pistons.
