Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs Snap Painfully-Long Losing Streak vs. Memphis Grizzlies

The San Antonio Spurs and rookie star Victor Wembanyama took down the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.

The San Antonio Spurs have finally ended a lengthy losing streak to their division rival Memphis Grizzlies.

Victor Wembanyama scored a game-high 18 points along with seven rebounds, six assists and seven blocks as the Spurs (20-59) snapped a 13-game losing streak in their all-time series vs. the Grizz with a 102-87 win at FedEx Forum on Tuesday night. San Antonio had last beat Memphis on Dec. 23, 2020.

The game featured 13 total players out with injury. This has been a theme for the Grizzlies (27-52) all season, but all five Memphis starters hit double figures in scoring on Tuesday. Scotty Pippen Jr., Brandon Clarke and Trey Jamison all scored 14 points, but the stat of the line came from guard Jordan Goodwin, who tallied 10 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.

The Spurs also got 17 points from forward Julian Champagnie while Sandro Mamukelashvili tallied 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Rookie Sidy Cissoko finished with a career-high 13 points off the bench and Blake Wesley added 13 as well.

Despite the Grizzlies' makeshift roster, they jumped out to a 14-point lead at 23-9 in the opening period thanks to Pippen and Goodwin. San Antonio trailed 25-16 at the end of the first frame, but bounced back in the second quarter to make it close. Still, the Grizzlies didn't budge and led for the entire period before heading into halftime up 49-48.

Wembanyama began the second half with an emphatic slam off a spin move to give San Antonio its first lead since the first quarter at 50-49. This helped jump-start some consistent play on both ends for the Spurs, who built their largest lead of 10 after Branham nailed a triple before the six-minute mark.

From here, the Spurs left no doubt, surrendering just 12 points in the third quarter. This allowed the offense to build a 20-point lead before Pop sent in the reserves.

San Antonio will visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.
