Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Elche: Reigning La Liga Champions Dazzle in Season Debut
Barcelona picked up right where they left off and destroyed Elche 5–0 in a dominant 2026–27 season debut on Sunday night.
For the second year in a row, it was Raphinha who scored the first goal of the season for Barcelona. The now club captain won a penalty and calmly tucked it into the bottom corner to start the Blaugrana party 15 minutes into the new term.
Barcelona failed to emphatically dominate proceedings in the first half, but they did manage to increase their lead before the break. A nice combination with Raphinha was capped off by Karim Adeyemi, scoring his first goal for Barça in his La Liga debut.
The floodgates opened in the second half when Raphinha completed his brace and Fermín López added the cherry on top with a pair of goals of his own. Summer recruit Anthony Gordon also left his mark with a couple of assists in his Barça debut.
Without ever leaving first gear, without a handful of regular starters and clearly still knocking off some rust, Barcelona categorically dismantled Elche in their season opener. It only took one game for Flick’s Barça to show flashes of the juggernaut they can become.

The One Thing We Can’t Ignore
Who Flick would select to lead the line for Barcelona was arguably the biggest question mark on the eve of the game. After a summer of an intense but ultimately unsuccessful pursuit to sign Julián Alvarez—sandwiched by the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, Barcelona’s two strikers from a season ago—it was Raphinha who operated as center forward against Elche.
There’s been reports coming from Catalonia that indicate that Flick is comfortable with his current attacking alternatives, content with relying on a fluid and almost position-less attack with dynamic, technically gifted forwards that aren’t necessarily classic strikers, a formula similar to what helped Paris Saint-Germain win consecutive Champions League titles.
In their season debut, Barcelona didn’t lack any punch in attack.
It’s clear that Barcelona’s striker situation is a work in progress and that Flick will likely try different alternatives, but barring any surprise striker acquisition, Raphinha could very well be the team’s primary center forward this season. The Brazilian’s energetic pressing caused Elche issues playing out of the back. That, combined with his proven productive track record could be the solution for Barcelona’s lack of a natural No. 9.
However, once Anthony Gordon replaced Lamine Yamal, it was the England international who played as a striker, with Raphinha drifting wide right—and the former immediately assisted the Brazilian’s brace. If all three are included in the same XI, it could be Gordon who leads the line, with Yamal to his right and Raphinha to his left.
Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Elche (4-3-2-1)
GK: Joan García—7.6: Had little work to do on the night, but on his first one-on-one of the season, he made a brilliant save to keep Elche from getting back in the game.
RB: Eric García—7.9: Likely should’ve had an assist had Yamal been more clinical early, but García still had a strong season debut. A critical last-ditch intervention to clear the ball inside the penalty area probably denied Elche from scoring the equalizer inside the opening half hour.
CB: Andreas Christensen—7.4: In his first start of the calendar year for Barça, Christensen was flawless. Handled his defensive duties well and didn’t misplace a single pass while registering the most of any player on the pitch.
CB: Gerard Martín—7.7: Like his partner alongside him, Martín didn’t put a foot wrong all game, leading the way with 13 defensive contributions.
LB: Xavi Espart—8.5: Looked somewhat uncomfortable early playing away from his natural position on the right, but his characteristic intensity did lead to the turnover that resulted in the action of Raphinha’s penalty. He was stellar the rest of the way.
DM: Marc Bernal—7.7: Misplaced routine passes constantly in what was an underwhelming performance. His inability to impose Barça’s terms in midfield resulted in a lack of control for the Catalans. Settled and improved as the game progressed.
DM: Gavi—6.5: Gavi’s injury demons reappeared 45 minutes into the new season, with the midfielder leaving the pitch before the break and going straight down the tunnel. Given his recent injury history, alarms were raised immediately.
RW: Lamine Yamal—7.1: Of all Barcelona forwards, Yamal was the least involved in proceedings. On the few opportunities he had, he missed the target. Not the dominant performance to start the term that he and all of Barcelona hoped for.
AM: Fermín López—9.0: A quiet game for the attacking midfielder, who was rarely involved in the areas where he’s at his most dangerous—if at all. That all changed late, when he came alive and scored a brace in 10 minutes to wrap-up a perfect season debut for the champions.
LW: Karim Adeyemi—8.0: Had a slow and erratic start but he responded emphatically with a nice finish to double Barça’s lead on the verge of halftime to open his account with the club.
ST: Raphinha—9.4: Took him just 15 minutes playing as a striker to bag his first goal of the term, converting a penalty he won.
SUB: Pedri (45’ for Gavi)—6.5: Not spectacular but unquestionably efficient. Pedri is still clearly knocking off some rust but a fantastic through-ball essentially resulted in Barça’s fourth.
SUB: Dani Olmo (65’ for Adeyemi)—6.2: Didn’t misplace any of the 15 passes he attempted in his cameo.
SUB: Anthony Gordon (65’ for Yamal)—8.2: Took him five minutes to collect his first two assists in Barça colors. A very promising debut from the England international.
SUB: João Cancelo (80’ for Raphinha)—N/A

What the Ratings Tell Us
- The lone negative note of Barcelona’s season debut is unquestionably a concerning one: Gavi’s injury. The midfielder left the pitch on the verge of tears just before halftime with a fitness issue that made it impossible for everyone not to think about the close to 20 months of action he’s missed over the past three years. Barcelona are well covered at the position, but all eyes will be on further information regarding Gavi’s latest setback.
- Xavi Espart had a nervy start, but once he settled, he was one of Barcelona’s best players on the pitch. Playing out of position at left back, he registered double-digit defensive contributions and even bagged an assist. On a day where Flick decided to leave Alejandro Balde out of Barça’s matchday squad, Espart showed he’s capable of holding his own at the position.
- It’s been four months and one day since Lamine Yamal tore his hamstring against Celta Vigo in his final appearance for Barça of 2025–26. He has since featured in nine games and even become a World Cup champion, but the superstar teenager has yet to come even close to flirting with his pre-injury level. It’s to early to raise the alarms, and he can get a pass given he barely had any preseason; however, it’s a situation worth monitoring given how essential he is to Barcelona’s success.
The Numbers That Explain Barcelona’s Impressive Season Opener
- Barcelona’s nine big chances created on the night were more than the seven total shots Elche manufactured.
- Although Elche missed three big chances, Barcelona’s backline still held the hosts to an xG of 0.72. Meanwhile, the Catalans produced a whooping 4.13.
- Flick’s attack was incredibly efficient, scoring five goals from seven shots on goal and 11 total attempts. To put this in perspective, Barcelona had 30 total shots the last time they faced Elche away, but only eight of them were on target and they scored only three goals.
