Sunderland confirm Ross Stewart will miss the rest of the season

Sunderland have confirmed that Ross Stewart will miss the rest of the season with the Achilles injury he suffered at Fulham.

The striker was attempting to latch onto a pass in the first half at Craven Cottage but pulled up in obvious pain and had to be stretchered off after treatment.

He will now miss the rest of the season with the injury following surgery next week.

“Sunderland AFC can confirm that Ross Stewart will miss the remainder of the season with an Achilles injury,” the club said in a short statement on safc.com.

“The striker was stretchered off during Saturday’s draw at Fulham, and will undergo surgery next week before beginning his rehabilitation.”

The good news is that Stewart will only miss the rest of the season. Whilst that is obviously far from ideal, it was expected to be a lot worse.

Sunderland had feared it was a complete tear in the Achilles tendon. However, Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that scans had revealed it was just a 30% tear.

That brought the recovery time down form potentially 18 months down to just four, meaning Stewart should be back for the start of pre-season training.

He joins captain Corry Evans in being out for the rest of the season too, with the Northern Irishman suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the win over Middlesbrough.
