Sunderland forward Leon Dajaku made a really positive impression on his first start for FC St Gallen.

The German joined the Swiss Super League side on loan in January as he went in search of regular football.

He made his debut at the end of January in a 14-minute cameo from the bench against FC Zurich, although he couldn’t prevent FC St Gallen from slipping to a 1-0 defeat.

However, this weekend he was in the starting line-up and played 57 minutes for his new side, helping them to a fine 3-0 win over Servette FC.

Dajaku was used as a central striker in the game, albeit in a support role for Jérémy Guillemenot. He was given licence to roam freely and certainly had an impact on the game.

He created the first goal with a sneaky shot, which may have been a miss-hit cross, and was heavily involved in the play that led to the second too, which was scored from the penalty spot.

You can watch him in action below – he is wearing number 77.

Sunderland have not given up on Dajaku by any means, and there remains a belief withing the club that he can develop into a valuable player for the Black Cats.

“Leon made a positive impact during his first season in England and although he is a versatile forward, our attacking positions are currently occupied by some of our most high performing players,” Kristjaan Speakman said after Dajaku made the move.

“At 21 years of age, it is important for a player of his profile to gain regular game time during the second part of the campaign and this an excellent opportunity for him to do that in the Swiss top-flight.

“We wish him well and look forward to supporting his progress from afar.”
