Sunderland have been linked with a move for towering Lyon midfielder Skelly Alvero, although they are not frontrunners for his signature.

The 6’7” 21-year-old has found his game time limited at Lyon since signing from Sochaux in the summer for €4million.

According to L’Equipe, that lack of game time will see him move before the transfer deadline this month and Sunderland are one of the clubs to register an interest.

Belgian club RWD Molenbeek agreed a loan deal for Alvero earlier this month but the player rejected the move, but Bundesliga side Werder Bremen are currently leading the race.

They have reportedly made an offer to take Alvero on loan with an option to purchase in the summer, and the lure of top division football may prove too much for Sunderland to overcome if they choose to make a serious push for him.

Sunderland are clearly looking for midfield reinforcements this month, with Barnsley’s Callum Styles also strongly linked with a move to Wearside.

Any new arrival is likely to be offset by the departure of Alex Pritchard, who is wanted by Birmingham and Italian side Como.
