LSU's Defense Leads the Nation in a Stat That Should Terrify SEC Offenses

After a historical offseason, the LSU Tigers look much different this season under Lane Kiffin, bringing in some of the nation's most elite transfer portal players.

Now that the talent has time to form dominant units on both sides of the ball over LSU's opponents this season, the defensive unit has been widely recognized for its production, holding an impressive stat over the rest of the league.

Becoming a terrifying defense that limits offensive production could be the Tigers' biggest strength in climbing to the top of the SEC this season.

Leading the League

LSU's defensive unit has emerged as the most productive pass rush in college football, leading the league in sacks through the first month of the season, with 19 sacks so far.

The Tigers have easily become an opposing quarterbacks worst nightmare, with pressure from the both the interior and exterior of the line to take down the offensive leader.

It's clearly put a halt to the Tigers' opponents' offensive production, keeping last Saturday's visitor, Texas A&M, out of the end zone the entire game, with the Aggies only adding two field goals to the scoreboard.

The depth across both the trenches and the secondary can keep the pass rush production going all season long, especially with the team's recent injuries.

The Leading Forces

While LSU's offensive line has seen some struggles early in the season, the defensive line has made up for it, thanks to exterior pressure from defensive end Princewill Umanmielen.

Umanmielen, an Ole Miss transfer who came with Kiffin for the short trip down to Baton Rouge, leads the unit in sacks, with seven sacks across four games. His takedown abilities have added up to 41 sack yards so far. And much more to come.

Another former Rebel has stood out on the unit, with linebacker TJ Dottery putting up 24 total tackles so far this season, becoming a standout addition to the unit this season.

On the interior of the line, defensive tackle Deuce Geralds is taking care of business with four sacks, the second most on the defense, quickly becoming a household name - as a true freshman.

LSU's impressive defense, leading the league in sacks, put the team up as one of the most feared opponents across the conference, being able to walk into big-time matchups with an extra advantage.

The Tigers must keep the pressure up through conference play, to emerge as one of the hardest units to be successful against, which can be the hidden weapon for the Tigers.

The team has a long season ahead, with a challenging SEC gauntlet late in the season, making for a season of tested endurance to not only keep up the scoring production from the offense, but for the defense to continue to shut down the scoring production for opponents.
