Did you notice?

• Alabama formally announced the home-and-home series with Virginia Tech, after the Hokies let the cat out of the bag on Thursday. The first game will take place in Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 2, 2034, with Virginia Tech returning the trip to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 1, 2035. “This series with Virginia Tech is another that we are excited about adding to our future schedules for football,” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said in a release. “It’s been many years since our two programs have visited each other’s campus with the last few matchups being played at a neutral site, and while it’s several years down the road, certainly a great opportunity at the beginning of the season for our teams and our fans.”

• Alabama senior Luca Fabian went a perfect 3-0 in the first day at the 32 annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. Fabian won both of her singles and her lone doubles match. Meanwhile, on men’s team junior Jeremy Gschwendtner came out strong in day one of the CCB Collegiate Invitational by winning both of his singles matches at the Country Club of Birmingham.

• The Alabama rowing team will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in its final regatta of the fall season, the Head of the Hooch. Crimson Tide boats will participate in four races on Saturday and two on Sunday.

• That’s good, right?

• Per the Dallas Morning News, the reason why all the contract talk with Amari Cooper has dried up is he now wants to wait until after the season to finish the extension. In early September, Julio Jones signed a three-year extension worth $66 million with $64 million guaranteed. The contract gave Jones the highest average salary in the NFL at his position ($22 million).

• The New York Jets have re-added linebacker Jamey Mosley to the practice squad.

• Another NFL 100 list, another Joe Namath listing. This time’s No. 7 among all-time game changers.

On this date in Crimson Tide history:

November 2, 1985: Freshman Gene Jelks became the first black player in Alabama history to top 100 yards in both rushing and receiving during a game. He had 18 carries for 168 yards and three receptions for 120 to lead Alabama’s 44-28 victory over Mississippi State. Amazingly, he didn’t score a touchdown. – Bryant Museum

Crimson Tide quote of the day:

“Before the [national championship] game against LSU I was comparing the defense from Alabama to the 1986 Oklahoma defense, which was considered by many to be the best defense in college football history. After that game, they went down as the greatest defense in college football history, and I want to congratulate him.” – ESPN analyst Lee Corso
