Volleyball: Alabama def. Auburn 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20

Did you notice?

• Freshman Alyiah Wells and senior Ginger Perinar both tallied double-digit kills with 14 and 12, respectively, as Alabama volleyball won a four-set match at rival Auburn. Alabama (10-4, 2-1 SEC) was also paced by freshman Emily Janek with a season-best 45 assists, junior Kaylee Thomas dug a career-best 24 balls and senior Hayley McSparin hit .462 with eight kills and four blocks. “I liked how we competed,” Crimson Tide coach Lindsey Devine said in a release. “We just had to keep working together as a team. I thought that our backcourt defense kept us in the match. Between that and our pass game, those were difference-makers in long rallies and really the difference-makers for the entire match. Hayley McSparin was offensively really strong and Emily Janek continues to find ways to connect with her attackers.”

• Nick Saban was asked on the weekly SEC coaches’ teleconference with reporters about the California law allowing student-athletes to profit from endorsements and make money off their likeness. “I don’t really have much of a reaction to it. I really honestly don’t know enough about the details. I don’t know the details of what the NCAA and the leadership will do in our conference at the university and the SEC office. I trust that these people will navigate through this like other issues and things that we’ve had in the past. It’s not really ... I’m kind of worried about our team and how we get our team ready to play and all that. I’m not really that concerned about it or know that much about it actually.”

• Softball landed one of the best prospects in the nation, Jenna Lord, a catcher/shortstop from Hewitt-Trussville who had previously played in Florida:

• Wide receiver Cam Sims was promoted off the practice squad by the Washington Redskins.

• Linebacker Tim Williams, released by the Baltimore Ravens this week, was claimed on waivers by the Green Bay Packers.

• Talk about a special delivery:

• Alabama has released another episode of Bama Cuts, with Kirk Herbstreit talking with Tua Tagovailoa, Terrell Lewis and Miller Forristall.

• The women's basketball team will appear seven times on ESPN2 or the SEC Network this season, including the Crimson Tide hosting Iowa State in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. CT. In conference play, Alabama will be featured on the SEC Network for home games against South Carolina (Jan. 5) and Auburn (Feb. 9). On the road UA will again be on the network on Monday, Jan. 20 against Tennessee, at Georgia (Feb. 16) and at Texas A&M (Feb. 27). The Feb. 23  game against Mississippi State has the option of airing on SEC Network or ESPN2.

• Former Alabama track star Kirani James made it through the semifinals of the 400m at the World Championships. He finished second in his heat with a time of 44.23 seconds.

• We’ll leave you with this regarding the growing families of former Alabama shortstop Josh Rutledge, and former Alabama tight end Preston Dial:

On this date in Crimson Tide history:

October 3, 2015: Ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25, Alabama re-established its national title hopes when it went to No. 8 Georgia and crushed the Bulldogs 38-10. Derrick Henry ran for 148 yards as the Crimson Tide jumped out to a 24-3 lead by halftime. Eddie Jackson’s pick-6 on a 50-yard return on Georgia's first offensive play of the second half ended any hopes of a comeback.

Crimson Tide quote of the day:

"Ever since I was little, I've dreamed of beating Georgia and all those good schools. This is pretty sweet." – Quarterback Jake Coker after the 2015 win over the Bulldogs.
