Bama in the NFL: Jalen Hurts and the Eagles Win Big in Week 9

A Crimson Tide quarterback won big at home, while a former Alabama Tight end scored his first touchdown of the season on Sunday night.

NFL Week 9 Recap:

  • Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins are facing scrutiny after their 21-14 loss to the Chiefs in Germany. Miami has struggled to beat teams with a winning record this season, and Kansas City jumped out to an early 21-0 lead. The Dolphins did not play badly as Tagovailoa threw for 193 yards and a touchdown, and Waddle caught three passes for 42 yards, and had one rush for 12 yards. But the wide receiver was in and out of the lineup with a knee injury. All of Miami's 14 points came in the third quarter. Miami has a get-right game back in the States next Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
  • Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles faced a tough challenge, hosting the division rival Dallas Cowboys. Hurts delivered to the tune of 207 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 36 yards and a touchdown on the ground. DeVonta Smith caught three passes for 51 yards and a score. Offensive lineman Tyler Steen got his first career start at right guard, helping the Eagles to a 28-23 victory. Eli Ricks had four tackles defensively.
  • Mac Jones and the Patriots tried to mount a comeback but fell short to the Commanders 20-17. The Patriots went down 10-0 early before storming back to take a 17-10 lead in the third quarter. Washington would tie the game and never look back. Jones passed for 220 yards, a touchdown, and had a pass picked off. The Washington Commanders' defense was led by Daron Payne (two tackles), and Jonathan Allen (one tackle). The Commanders are one win away from .500, while the Patriots are in a spiral and could begin to think about changes in the organization this offseason.
  • Josh Jacobs led the Las Vegas Raiders to an emotional win under interim head coach Antonio Pierce, 30-6 win over the New York Giants. Jacobs ran for 98 yards and two scores, both in the first half. The Raiders host the other team from New York, the Jets, next week as they try to get to .500. For the Giants, safety Xavier McKinney led the team in tackles with 10, while defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson had six, including one tackle for loss.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals outlasted the Buffalo Bills 24-18 on Sunday night. Tight end Irv Smith Jr. opened the scoring in the game by catching his first touchdown as a Bengal. Smith caught three balls for 26 yards and the score. Cincinnati advanced to 5-3 on the season and is firmly in the thick of the playoff hunt.

NFL Week 9 Preview

  • Following trade rumors that Derrick Henry might get traded, the Tennessee Titans committed to their superstar running back for the remainder of the season. Henry and the Titans won in Week 8, setting up a matchup on Thursday night with Najee Harris and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Henry sits halfway to the century mark with 521 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on the season. Harris is in a similar situation in Pittsburgh, with just 313 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Both running backs should see a considerable workload in this one. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring) is out after leaving last week's game early.
  • Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins have a unique test this week, traveling to Frankfurt, Germany for a matchup with the defending Super Bowl champions: The Kansas City Chiefs. This game features the top two betting favorites to win NFL MVP this season, as they're leading two of the most efficient offenses in the league. It'll be an early rise for fans in the United States, but the offensive shootout should be worth it.
  • Mac Jones and the New England Patriots are sitting in a rough spot, with just two wins this season, but the Commanders have been struggling as well. Jones will face a pair of Crimson Tide defenders, one of whom was his college teammate. Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen head up a Washington defensive line that recently lost its two best edge rushers on the trade deadline, putting more pressure on Allen and Payne to produce on the interior. Jones will need a good performance if the Patriots hope to right the ship after losing four of their last five games.
  • Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers earned their first win of the season last week, and they'll look to continue that momentum against Indianapolis. The Colts' season has not gone as planned, with rookie quarterback sensation Anthony Richardson out for the season due to injury. Young and the Panthers will play host, which should give them a good chance to secure their second win.
  • Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles are tied for the best record (7-1), and will host a division rival this week: The Dallas Cowboys. This game is pivotal in the NFC East race, with the Cowboys and the Eagles both fighting for playoff positioning and a division title. Hurts will have plenty of Crimson Tide help, with Julio Jones and DeVonta Smith as two of his top three passing targets. Defensively, Eli Ricks is developing as a solid backup for the Eagles in his rookie season.
