In addition to the program’s two fall signees — freshman Myra Gordon and JUCO transfer Keyara Jones — University of Alabama’s women’s basketball coach Kristy Curry welcomed three new players on Wednesday.

First is Middle Tennessee State transfer guard Taylor Sutton, who will have to sit out the 2020-2021 campaign. Sutton was named Conference USA’s Freshman of the Year in 2018-2019, and during her sophomore season she poured in 11.6 points per game and shot 35 percent from three-point range for the Blue Raiders.

“Taylor brings a tremendous basketball IQ coupled with her scoring ability she will be a great addition to our backcourt,” Curry said. “She will learn the system sitting out due to transfer rules this next year and no doubt be an impact in the seasons to come.”

The Crimson Tide added some depth in the post with 6-foot-5 center Ruth Koang from South Plains Community College in Levelland, Tx. She averaged 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season, helping lead the Lady Texans to a 32-1 record and win a Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship. The Rochester, N.Y. native will have two years of eligibility left.

“Ruth brings size, speed and athleticism to the post position that will give us a different dimension inside,” Curry said. “Her ability to run the floor, finish and alter shots at the rim will be a great addition for our team.”

Lastly, 6-foot-3 center Alana Busby-Dunphy was the team’s final addition on Wednesday. A native of Euerka, Calif., Busby-Dunphy just finished her first season at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas. She averaged 4.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks a game in her lone campaign with the Conquistadors. Her presence was felt on the defensive end with 23 multi-block contests.

"Alana brings depth to our post position with her length and shot blocking ability,” Curry said. “She will have three years remaining and we are excited to watch her development in our program as she possesses a tremendous upside.”

Overall, Curry believes this class can help continue lead the program in the right direction moving forward after coming off a season that generated NCAA tournament buzz.

“This class will be great additions to an already great group of returnees,” Curry said. “We feel like we have addressed our needs with the versatile scoring, athleticism and size that this class will bring. They all come from great basketball backgrounds and bring a gritty, winning mentality.”
