FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The current mess going on inside the Arkansas Razorbacks basketball program is quite confusing. It’s understandable if casual fans don’t get it because reporting is just weird.

Reports stating Eric Musselman is looking around or leaving are out there. No, journalists usually don’t state their source, which is part of the trade. If told something in anonymity it has to stay that way or you lose the source.

Rumors and reports are shared for many of reasons. Perhaps it’s for leverage, a pay raise or an extension. If an agent isn’t gauging interest from a school for a client, they aren’t doing a good job and aren’t worth the money. Most times, the coach/client has no idea the work going on behind scenes.

Musselman’s name was hotter than grits just a couple of seasons ago. Back-to-back Elite Eight appearances will do that to anyone. The truth of the matter is Musselman sits 14-22 over the past two seasons in SEC play. Don’t forget about the two No. 1 seeds Arkansas has knocked off in two previous tournaments.

Jobs are opening left and right around the country. Louisville has been a place Musselman’s name has come up the most. The failures of this year’s team may have affected his stock a tad. Oklahoma State, Michigan, Washington and potentially Arizona State are options.

There’s always a chance Musselman winds up staying for another season or more. That’s the nature of the beast when it comes to the carousel. Everything in the profession is fluid and ever changing.

This Razorback team might’ve been the exception to the rule under Musselman. No, they didn’t mesh well and if reports of chemistry being off is actually true it’s time to assemble a new team. A losing record isn’t going to sell tickets to fill Bud Walton Arena either. It’s imperative that something change and it may be how Arkansas targets potential transfers.

How Musselman equips his squad over the next 45 days will tell folks what his plans are. Most likely being the head coach of the Razorbacks.
