Cam Coleman: Under Armour Practice Observations

Seeing future Auburn Tigers play live, and in front of one's own face, is the best way to evaluate their skills. Fortunately, watching Cam Coleman go through the Under Armour All-America practice and complete one-on-one drills, would be as good as it gets.

Here are some of the highlights and overall thoughts about Coleman from today's event. First, he ran a comeback route that opens the eyes!. The ball goes high and to the outside. Before it even came close to Coleman, the pass simply looked uncatchable. Wrong!

Not only did Coleman grab the football, he made it look like there was no doubt it would be a habitual habit. Coleman strapped both hands securely on the football. Explosive, twitchy, and with the necessary hand-eye coordination all went into that reception.

Another area Coleman continues to excel would be getting open deep. Most of the day the cornerbacks went with bump-and-run coverage, and it did not work out all that well. Despite Coleman's long legs, his first-step quickness allowed him to disengage from the cornerback quickly. One of his favorite moves is a hard shoulder fake in one direction, and then he would drive in the opposite direction with his quick footwork.

Coleman does a nice job of stacking a defensive back and giving himself room to make the play where a cornerback cannot reach the football. There's also the contested catches to discuss.

He's not perfect, but Coleman wins more than his fair share of 50-50 ball opportunities. The arm length Coleman has helps. His timing is just as important as it helps him maximize chances to catch the football away from his body where shorter defensive backs will struggle to knock the football to the ground. Finally, it's about consistency.

Whether he would be coming off a catch or an incompletion, the next rep for Coleman would see tremendous effort. Same mentality over and over. That type of attitude will help Coleman make an early impact on the Plains.
