Auburn briefing: Is Hugh Freeze one of the best coaches in college football?

Hugh Freeze is a good recruiter. There isn't any doubting that.

The Tigers tacked on 20 transfers to their 2023 recruiting class, which was good for No. 3 among all portal classes in the nation. He added pieces along the offensive line, improved the receiver room significantly, revamped the linebacking core, and brought in a quarterback he believes can make his offense go.

We've yet to see what Freeze looks like on the field, but on paper Auburn has become significantly more competitive than they were half a year ago.

247Sports recently released a Coach Rating Index that ranked the top 10 coaches in college football. According to the index, Freeze is the eighth-best coach in college football.

Again, this ranking comes without having seen the product on the field this fall. The Tigers have an incredibly difficult schedule and will likely struggle at various points across the slate. Will Freeze and his staff be able to overcome most of the obstacles, rightly earning this high ranking from 247Sports? Only time will tell.
