Baylor at Oklahoma Notebook: Bears Prevail with Solid Defense, Offensive Discipline

Baylor Bears trail only once, hold on to win in Norman, Oklahoma for second time ever

Better late than never.

After the Baylor Bears football team picked up its second win in Norman, Oklahoma EVER this past weekend, it’s time to take a quick look at some of the key points that led to the team’s 38-35 victory over the Sooners.

And now that fans, players and coaches alike have had a few days to let this win soak in, let's begin the list.

Baylor trailed only once in this contest at 7-0.

That's correct, ladies and gentlemen. After falling behind 7-0 to start the game, the Bears battled back to tie it up before taking the lead for good and never looking back.

Sure, Oklahoma got close on numerous occasions, but Baylor ultimately hung on to win by three.

Fourth down conversions were crucial.

This year's Baylor Bears football team is NOT afraid to go for it on fourth down.

In fact, one of the main reasons the Bears were able to tie the game is converting on a crucial 4th and 7 that eventually led to a touchdown to deadlock the game at 7-7.

Baylor went 3-for-3 on forth downs in Norman, a key factor to the Bears big win on the road.

Solid defense led to points.

Another key factor to Baylor's road win at Oklahoma was the stifling defense, as the secondary came up big time and time again for the Bears.

Nothing silences a crowd more than stingy defense, and Baylor proved that multiple time in Norman, garnering three interceptions en route to a three-point win.

Offensive disciple secured a much-needed road win.

When the media spoke with Baylor head coach Dave Aranda heading into the locker room at the break, he stressed the importance of discipline.

"More discipline," Aranda said when asked about what the Bears need to improve upon in the second half. "There's a fair amount going on that we need to get fixed."

Well, whatever Aranda said at halftime worked to perfection, as disciple was key in the Bears holding on for a 38-35 victory.

A team-leading 192 rushing yards and two touchdowns from running back Craig "Sqwirl" Williams was also vital for Baylor, as rushing once again proved pivotal in the Bears win -- with the team tallying 281 rushing yards along with 132 passing yards in last weekend's win.
