BYU Brings in a Promising 2024 PWO Class

BYU will welcome another strong class of preferred walk-ons

BYU has made a concerted effort to improve its roster through not only scholarship players in recent classes, but preferred walk-ons as well. In fact, the PWO program has been a strength under head coach Kalani Sitake. The 2024 class was no exception. A few players turned down scholarship opportunities to walk on at BYU in this class. In total, BYU brought in 11 preferred walk-ons in this class. Below is a recap of the 2024 PWO class.

1. David Clifford - OL

Back in August, BYU picked up a commitment from California offensive lineman David Clifford. Clifford, a three-star prospect, picked a preferred walk-on spot at BYU over scholarship offers from Arizona, San Diego State, Utah State, Colorado State, Nevada, San Jose State, and Army among others.

BYU typically recruits really big offensive tackles. Clifford is a little bit shorter at 6'4. Given his height, he might be a candidate to move inside and play guard at BYU.

Clifford is the ideal player to bring on campus as a preferred walk-on. He will bring enough talent to Provo to push for a spot on the depth chart and work for a scholarship. He will improve the depth along the offensive line. He is a violent run blocker with good leverage.

2. Dylan Dunn - QB

On Wednesday, Kansas native and quarterback Dylan Dunn committed to BYU as a PWO. Dunn, who is listed at 6'4, is coming off a record-setting senior season. He threw for 3,777 yards, a school record. He tallied 47 touchdowns to 5 interceptions while completing 74% of his passes. In his announcement, Dunn said he chose to walk on at BYU over FBS offers. He was recruited by Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Arkansas State among others during the process.

In his career, he threw for 9,148 total yards which ranks second in Kansas high school football history. He led the state of Kansas in passing for three consecutive years and he tallied 98 total touchdowns.

3. Tyler West - WR

One of the state's fastest and most productive players committed to BYU late on Monday night. Wide receiver prospect Tyler West committed to BYU wide receivers coach Fesi Sitake and the rest of the coaching staff. As a senior last season, West had over 1,300 receiving yards, 21 touchdowns, and he was also dynamic as a kick returner. West led the Crimson Cliffs to a 4A state championship last season.

4. Lance Reynolds - ATH

Quarterback Lance Reynolds is the son of former standout BYU offensive lineman Lance Reynolds. Reynolds was offered by BYU clear back in March of 2023. Unfortunately, Reynolds suffered a torn ACL that limited his senior season. He committed to BYU on Wednesday and was not announced by the program, meaning he has decided to start as a walk on at BYU. He could end up playing quarterback or another position like safety or even wide receiver.

5. Luke Nadauld - S/WR

Springville standoud Luke Nadauld committed to BYU as a PWO back in December. He held a competing offer from Utah State when he locked down his recruitment and committed to the Cougars. He will join the program after his mission and likely start out at safety.

6. Asher Young - WR/S

Orem star Asher Young committed to BYU near the end of January. Young has great size at 6'4 and 200 pounds and he could end up at wide receiver and safety.

7. Carson Cox - WR/TE

Speaking of tall wide receivers, Ridgeline star Carson Cox committed to BYU. Cox is listed at 6'5 and he is also an all-state basketball player.

8. Easton Merrell - WR

Another wide receiver? You bet. Maple Mountain standout Easton Merrell committed to BYU. Merrell grew up going to BYU games with his family.

Transfer Walk-Ons

1. Treyson Bourguet - QB

Western Michigan quarterback transfer Treyson Bourguet committed to BYU back in January. Bourguet, who has three years of eligibility remaining, started eight games for Western Michigan over the last two seasons. Bourguet began classes already and will be available to participate in Spring camp.

As a true freshman in 2022, Bourguet started four games in the back half of the season. In four starts, he threw for 601 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He also ran for 154 yards and a score. Since he only played in four games, Bourguet preserved his redshirt.

As a redshirt freshman in 2023, Bourguet started four games and appeared in two more games. He threw for 713 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. His best game came against Ball State where he threw for 328 yards, 3 touchdowns an no interceptions in a 42-24 win.

2. Marque Collins - CB

Weber State cornerback transfer Marque Collins committed to BYU. Collins, who has one year of eligibility remaining, played in more than 40 games at Weber State. Collins was on campus this weekend for an official visit and he committed after the visit. Collins will be a seventh-year senior in 2024. He wasn't announced by BYU, meaning he decided to walk on at BYU.

At Weber State, Collins had five career interceptions. Going into the 2023 season, Collins ranked seventh in Weber State history in career pass breakups with 18. He has played more than 1,600 career snaps according to Pro Football Focus.

3. Darrien "Bleu" Stewart - S

Utah transfer Darrien Stewart entered the transfer portal and quietly enrolled at BYU a few weeks later. Stewart never made an official announcement, but he has appeared on BYU's social media posts doing workouts.
