On Tuesday evening, BYU picked up a commitment from California offensive lineman David Clifford. Clifford, a three-star prospect, picked a preferred walk-on spot at BYU over scholarship offers from Arizona, San Diego State, Utah State, Colorado State, Nevada, San Jose State, and Army among others.

"I appreciate all the coaches that recruited me," Clifford said on social media. "But I know that BYU is the right place for me. Thank you Coach Sitake and Coach Funk for the opportunity. Go Cougs!"

Clifford preps at Poway High School in Poway, California. As a junior, he was named the offensive player of the year at Poway High School. Poway went 10-0 in the regular season in 2022 before losing in the playoffs. After the season, he was named to the All-State junior team and he was named to the All-League team for the second time in his career.

BYU typically recruits really big offensive tackles. Clifford is a little bit shorter at 6'4. Given his height, he might be a candidate to move inside and play guard at BYU.

Clifford is the ideal player to bring on campus as a preferred walk-on. He will bring enough talent to Provo to push for a spot on the depth chart and work for a scholarship. He will improve the depth along the offensive line. He is a violent run blocker with good leverage.

Clifford is the first preferred walk-on commitment of the 2024 recruiting class.
