Clemson Football: 5-star linebacker Sammy Brown updates his recruitment

Sammy Brown, a 5-star linebacker in the 2024 class, provided updates on his recruitment and a timeline for his commitment.

Recruiting classes are graded by the caliber of players you sign, but they're defined by which elite recruits you were and weren't able to land. Clemson is still looking for the crown jewel of their 2024 class, which currently ranks 17th in the country according to 247.

One of the players that could take up that mantle is 5-star linebacker Sammy Brown of Jefferson, Georgia. The No. 1 linebacker in the class per 247, Brown is coveted by all the bluebloods in college football. We had a chance to catch up with Brown as he began spring practice with the Jefferson Dragons. According to Brown, he's down to just five finalists for his services.

"I've kind of narrowed it down to five: Tennessee, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State," said Brown. "That's kind of, that's the officials I have set right now. So that's kind of the five I've been focusing on."

As a freshman and sophomore, Sammy Brown teamed up with now Georgia safety Malaki Starks at Jefferson. There's a chance that Brown wants to play ball with the Freshman All-American again, and Georgia is appearing like the team to beat for him, but Clemson is right there in the race.

"It's another really strong relationship. Coach [Wes] Goodwin and Coach [Dabo] Sweeney have been there... I mean, even before I got the offer, it's just been a really strong relationship with them. They've got a really good culture, and they've always been historically good on defense."

Georgia was the third team to offer Brown, way back in November of 2021. Clemson's offer didn't come until March of 2022, but that tracks with the way Swinney operates. Clemson recruits a certain type of young man and that typically causes them to be slower in extending an offer.

"It doesn't really matter to me," said Brown of the timeline. "It's just kind of them upholding their own standard of not offering too early just in case something happens. But, you know, like you said, they show interest, it's not like they don't show interest or anything. It's just the matter of getting that offer later."

Fans won't have to wait much longer to find out where Brown is headed as he's looking at making the announcement this summer. "I think kind of the first week of July is what I'm shooting for just to get it over with and focus on senior year."
