Colorado Women's Basketball Retaining Star Piece for Senior Season

Three stops later, guard Zyanna Walker is home.
Walker will return to the Colorado Buffaloes next season, she announced on social media Thursday. The junior was a key reason for Colorado's recent NCAA Tournament berth and will look to build on that impact as a senior in 2026-27.
Zyanna Walker Announces Stay With Colorado

In her first season with Colorado after transferring from Kansas State, Walker earned All-Big 12 Defensive Team honors for the second straight time. She was also an All-Big 12 honorable mention. Walker led the Buffaloes and was fourth in the conference with 2.1 steals per game while averaging 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
While not the most consistent offensive force, her natural talent led to brilliance in numerous important games. She scored 19 points in a Big 12 Tournament upset of No. 20 Baylor that sealed Colorado's spot in March Madness, then dropped 16 against West Virginia in a valiant semifinal effort.
Despite missing almost all of the offseason due to health and legal matters, Walker didn't miss a beat. She scored 19 against the team she started her college career with, the powerhouse Louisville Cardinals, in just her second game back.

She went on to score 15 or more points seven additional times, including a career-high 24 in a vital win over Kansas. A game prior, she tallied her first career double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) against her other former squad in K-State. Walker was named a Big 12 Starting Five Performer for those performances.
Her jumper was silky but lacked consistency, as she shot just 42 percent from the field, 23.2 percent on 3s and 69.5 percent from the free-throw line. Yet her strong 5-11 frame allowed elite two-way versatility, patrolling the perimeter on both ends.
Colorado Hoping To Stick Together

In a CU Athletics statement released Thursday about Walker's return, athletic director Fernando Lovo indicated it's the start of a financial boost for coach JR Payne's squad. On Saturday, the school announced that it's doubling the men's basketball budget, and women's basketball will see a similar increase.
"I’m so excited that Zy will be coming back for her senior year,” Lovo said Thursday. “The tremendous example she’s set on the floor and in the classroom has established her as an important team leader. Bringing back core players like Zy illustrates our commitment to increasing investment in our women’s basketball team so that we can continue to compete at the highest level.”
With transfer portal overhauls wreaking havoc on Colorado's last two offseasons, Walker's affirmation is a solid sign that the current Buffs will largely stay together. Guard Kennedy Sanders, forward Logyn Greer, along with centers JoJo Nworie and Sophie Zadel, left positive responses on social media. Guard Desiree Wooten co-signed the move with an Instagram story.
Last season's Buffaloes had especially prevalent chemistry, as Walker fostered close friendships with Wooten, Greer and now-graduating forward Jade Masogayo. She'll finish her college career in Boulder with a vital role for Colorado's success and mentality that aligns with Payne's culture.
“This is my favorite team I’ve played for by far,” Walker said after the season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. “Everybody’s a family, coaches and players together as one. It’s just never been like that for any of the programs I played for. We’re just so close as a team, so of course this one is super special for sure.”
