Keyshawn Johnson says Deion Sanders' Colorado coaching staff is the best in college football
The talk of the college football off-season was how Deion Sanders would put together a winning culture at Colorado. What might've been overlooked in the process of all the criticism toward Coach Prime's unconventional tactics was his solid coaching staff hires.
Keyshawn Johnson believes it's one of the most underrated characteristics for the Buffs going into the 2023 season. The former Super Bowl champion and the newest addition to FOX Sports' talent lineup gave his thoughts on how Sanders will fare in his FBS debut this weekend.
"The coaching staff, probably in my opinion, might be the best in the country," Johnson said. "Deion came in there and said I'm bringing my Louis Vuitton. You guys, some of y'all are not going to be here, and he completely turned things upside down."
He went on to say, "(Sanders) went into the portal and got his player. Now, we did that at USC. We went into the portal and got a bunch of players, and turned things around."
Colorado comes into the season with a record 86 new players and the most talent turnover for an FBS program since the transfer portal was established five years ago. With all the focus turned to how the Buffs roster came together, there aren't many analysts applauding Sanders for building a tremendous base of coaches.
"(Sanders) has a number of former head coaches both from the NFL and college," Johnson noted. "Guys like Tim Brewster (and) Pat Shurmur. Then you think about Sean Lewis, the former head coach at Kent State, who's now calling the offense for Deion.
"Here's the kicker for you. Mike Zimmer is floating around somewhere on the campus. It's not an official capacity, but he's somewhere helping out. So, when you have that makeup, you know how to get guys in and out of certain situations."
