Coach K: I think sometimes, we kind of watched Zion and RJ play

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said that Matthew Hurt was the most advanced freshman on the defensive end.

“Matthew is probably ahead of everybody,” he said. “He can guard the perimeter and bigs. He really has great concentration on the defensive end already.”

Krzyzewski is encouraged by the rest of the team’s defense as well.

“The other guys are good,” he said. “Wendell (Moore) should be really good. Cassius (Stanley). Vernon (Carey) has become more athletic. He’s lighter. We’re pleased with the freshmen. We’re pleased with the upperclassmen too. Javin (DeLaurier) and Jack (White) had sensational summers.”

Krzyzewski also discussed point guard Tre Jones.

“The main thing Tre had to do was get healthy,” he said. “He had another hip operation last spring. On the right side. He already had one the year before on the left side. We held him out until the last week of August. He’s lighter—8 pounds. He’s quicker, more athletic. He’s gonna make the engine run here. He’s the guy that helps us make great decisions.”

Krzyzewski thinks Jones will have an easier time distributing the ball to his year’s team.

“Playing with RJ (Barrett) and Zion (Williamson), especially, you have to give them the ball,” he said. “You didn’t necessarily have to give them the ball so they’d be ready to score. You had to give them the ball so they could move defense and score. I think sometimes, we kind of watched those two kids play, instead of playing off of them.”

“Tre’s going to be as key a person as we have and our leader,” he concluded.
