FSU Football Has Legitimate Quarterback Competition This Spring

Questions remain after FSU’s first scrimmage failed to settle the quarterback battle.

Florida State’s first spring scrimmage may have offered some clarity at a few positions on the depth chart, but quarterback doesn’t appear to be one of them. While Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels entered camp as the presumed frontrunner, redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry has continued to keep the battle alive through the first half of spring, leaving one of the Seminoles’ most important offseason decisions unresolved.

Multiple sources, including NoleGameday, have indicated the battle is likely to stretch through the remainder of spring camp, even if Daniels’ experience in multiple offensive systems has given him an early edge.

On3 Reports FSU QB Battle Remains Tight

A recent report from On3’s Pete Nakos suggests the Seminoles remain far from naming a starter under center. According to Nakos, Florida State is still in a “clear two-way competition” between Daniels and Sperry following the team’s first scrimmage, with no clear timeline for when the battle could be settled.

"Sources have told On3 that after the first scrimmage, it’s a clear two-way competition between Daniels and Sperry. A former three-star recruit, Sperry is a redshirt freshman who handles the offense well. He’s also impressed with a handful of throws.

There’s no clear timeline at this point for when Norvell could name a starter at quarterback. Sperry is pushing Daniels in the quarterback competition through the opening weeks of spring ball," On3 reported, “We’re going to have two QBs that can go in and win games."

Florida State Still Waiting for a Starter to Emerge

While Norvell didn’t specifically address the quarterbacks during a media availability on Tuesday, his comments on how Florida State is evaluating spring competition offered some insight into the broader approach.

“You start where you start, and then you move up," Norvell said. "When you’re productive, coming in and whoever it is that you’re going against, you get better opportunities."

It isn't unheard of for Norvell not to jump the gun at naming a starting quarterback. The last clear starter named prior to fall camp was Jordan Travis for both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Florida State brought in DJ Uiagalelei the following year, and then Tommy Castellanos, who was announced as the starter ahead of August.

Daniels remains the most likely candidate to open the season as Florida State’s starter, given his experience, physical tools, and familiarity with the demands that come with leading a Power Four offense. That said, Sperry has done enough through last year and the first half of spring to ensure the battle isn’t set in stone, and with two more scrimmages and fall camp still ahead, the Seminoles may not have their final answer under center anytime soon.
