Oregon running backs coach Carlos Locklyn calls to players Thursday, April 14, 2022

Report: Former FSU Football Staffer Joining Ohio State Buckeyes As RBs Coach

The former Seminole staff member spent the last two seasons at Oregon.

There typically aren't many major coaching moves across college football in April but that's exactly what happened to begin the month. With the spring underway, two of the top programs in the sport are undergoing a shakeup to their staff.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Ohio State has agreed to a deal with Oregon's Carlos Locklyn to coach running backs. Locklyn, a former off-field staffer at Florida State, is coming off a two-year stint with the Ducks where he worked for head coach Dan Lanning.

The Buckeyes were in need of a new running backs coach after Tony Alford departed to take a job with rival Michigan in March. They found a quality replacement in Locklyn, who helped guide Bucky Irving to back-to-back 1,000+ yard campaigns in Eugene. Irving is coming off a First-Team All-PAC 12 nomination and will be one of the top running backs selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

While Locklyn's profile expanded at Oregon, he also had successful stints at Western Kentucky, Florida State, Memphis, and at the high school level. Locklyn worked under head coach Mike Norvell with the Seminoles and Tigers from 2017-20. He was the Director of High School Relations at FSU in 2020 before being hired for his first job as a position coach at the college level by Western Kentucky.

Locklyn's relationship with Norvell began in 2017 when he joined Memphis as a weight room assistant. He was promoted to offensive analyst in 2018 before being named Director of High School Relations the following year. Locklyn's time with the Tigers paved the way for his eventual job at Oregon as he worked on the same staff with Lanning for a year.

Prior to coaching at the college level, Locklyn spent nearly a decade across at the high school ranks as an offensive coordinator. He worked in Tennessee for Trezevant High School, Westwood High School, Manassas High School, and Cordova High School.
