Georgia Men's Basketball Rolling, Silas Demary Jr. a Major Reason Why

The Georgia men's basketball program has seemed to have hit its stride as of late, and freshman Silas Demary Jr. has been a major reason why.

It's been quite a while since Georgia's men's basketball team was relevant. The last time the Bulldogs finished inside of the top 10 within the conference was back in 2016 when Mark Fox was the head coach. Now under Mike White, Georgia sits fourth in the conference with a 14-5 overall record and a 4-2 record within the conference. The Bulldogs' success can be attributed to several things and multiple players, but one player has made a drastic impact on both sides of the court.

Coach White went digging into the transfer portal last offseason where he was able to find several players that are now major contributors for the Bulldogs. Both Noah Thomasson and RJ Melendez are two of the top four scorers for Georgia this season. But White, like any good coach, also made sure to tap into the high school talent pool and signed four players to the class. One of which has been stapled into the starting lineup as a true freshman.

Just like every great football team needs a good quarterback, every great basketball team needs a good facilitator. Someone who helps control the pace, set the tone on both offense and defense and make sure the ball is in the right spots. Georgia has all of those things in their point guard Silas Demary Jr., as he has quickly emerged as one of the top players for the Bulldogs.

Over his last four games, Demary Jr. is averaging 16.3 points per game, 2.3 assists and is shooting 55 percent from the floor. Over that same stretch, he racked up eight steals and five blocks. The definition of a do-it-all player at the point and it has helped immensely this season.

For reference of just how good Demary Jr. has been for the Bulldogs as of late, he became the first Georgia freshman to average 15 points per game while shooting better than 50 percent from the floor since Anthony Edwards in 2020 over a four game stretch. Those are theonly two players to have done so since Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in 2011.

While there is still a ways to go before the 2023-2024 college basketball season comes to a close, it seems safe to conclude two things about coach White. Not only can he obtain valuable contributors through the transfer portal, which has now become a priority in the modern age of college sports, but he can find new and young players to siphon through the program as well. Demary Jr. is the latest example, and based on who Georgia already has lined up in the next recruiting cycle, that trend doesn't look to be coming to a stop anytime soon.
