What's Next for Georgia Basketball?

After losing to Seton Hall in the final four of the NIT tournament, the question of "what is next for Georgia Basketball?" must be answered.

Georgia’s men’s basketball season officially came to a close Tuesday night as Seton Hall defeated them in the round of the final four in the NIT. Mike White and his program made quite the run over the past couple of weeks earning victories against Xavier, Wake Forest and Ohio State to bring their season-long win total to 20 games. However, despite the exciting run, it’s time to answer the question of what is next for Georgia basketball?

First and foremost, Coach White and his staff have to work on retaining the roster. Following yesterday’s loss to Seton Hall, starting point guard and true freshman Silas Demary Jr. said, “I’m going to decompress. We’ve been playing basketball since June, so honestly, I’m going to take some time away, relax, and rest my body. It’s been a long season. Obviously, I’ve got to have those conversations but I’m going to take my time and make sure I do what’s best for me.”

This isn’t to sound the alarm that Georgia is going to have a mass exodus on the roster this offseason, but it’s just the new reality of college sports. Core players on the 2023 roster like Demary Jr. will need to be retained by Coach White this offseason to ensure that things continue to be on the up for the program heading into the 2024 season.

At the same time though, Georgia is going to have to get busy in the portal as well. Right now in the 2024 recruiting class, five-star Asa Newell is the only commitment. Time is running out on the possibility of making any more additions from the high school level, so it looks like Coach White will have to go looking in the portal again.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Bulldogs found some highly impactful players from the transfer portal last season in the forms of Noah Thomasson, RJ Melendez, Jalen Deloach and Russel Tchewa. If the Bulldogs can find a couple more solid roster additions this offseason that would pair up nicely with Newell and the rest of the roster, then they will be in good shape for 2024.

The most important thing for the Bulldogs is making sure that they don’t squander the momentum they just built up in the NIT tournament. Ending the season on a final four appearance, even if it wasn’t in March Madness, was a huge deal for the perspective of the program and momentum going into the offseason. Coach White has his team moving in the right direction but he will also have some important business to attend to this offseason.
