Georgia Tech Wins First in Weekend Series against Tennessee Tech

Yellow Jackets win 12-3 with the help of 2 home runs and a grand slam

Georgia Tech came into their 5th game of the season 4-0 and after a sizable win against Tennessee Tech in the first of their weekend series, moved up to 5-0. The #22 Yellow Jackets beat the Golden Eagles 12-3 in the first of their 3-game series, and if the rest of the weekend is anything like today, these should be some fun offensive games with the potential for many more home runs.

Today’s game brought 3 home runs, one each from Jake Deleo, Angelo Dispigna, and Jackson Finley. On the flip side, Tennessee Tech also had 2 home runs that put them on top at the time.

Tech’s starting lineup today:

1. CF- Jake DeLeo

2. IF- Angelo Dispigna

3. RF- Stephen Reid

4. 1B- John Geisler

5. C- Jack Rubenstein

6. 2B- Nicholas Romano

7. DH- Jackson Finley

8. SS- Jadyn Jackson

9. 3B- Brant Baughcum

At pitcher was right-hander Dawson Brown who earned his second start of the season. The junior’s first game this season only saw him playing a rocky 2.2 innings, but today he made it through 6 complete innings before coming out for the day. He let up 3 runs and 4 hits. In 22 batters faced, Brown threw 12 strikes, though he did allow 2 home runs, the first of which gave Tennessee Tech the early lead. Brown finished the day with 61 strikes in 87 pitches, a solid day from the starter.

In the second inning, Tennessee Tech was etched into the scorecard first after they homered to center field, but Brown was able to hold them off from scoring again until the 5th. Thankfully, the Yellow Jackets have shown a great offense this season so far, and in the third inning, GT answered with a DeLeo 2-run home run to center field after a pitch hit Baughcum.

In the fifth and sixth innings, TTU was able to tie and then take the lead after a solo home run and an RBI double that brought the game to 2-3. The Golden Eagles continued to struggle offensively, though, and never scored again after the 6th inning. From this point on, though, it was all about Georgia Tech’s offense who responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th.

Giesler had doubled to left field, Rubenstein was hit by a pitch, and Finley came up with a massive 3-RBI home run to left center. Ending the 6th with GT up 5-3, the game almost seemed over as our offense was getting on a roll.

Entering the top of the 7th, relief pitching for Brown was Ben King, a redshirt sophomore, who threw for 2 innings, keeping our lead steady and not letting up any runs. In the 9 batters he faced, King threw 5 strikeouts, allowed just 1 hit, and had 22 strikes in his 35 pitches. King had just one error where he hit the batter, allowing a walk. The right-hander provided everything that was needed from him today.

The 7th inning showed signs of promise of another big scoring stretch with 2 runners on base, and Reid hit a sacrifice flyout for an RBI to get the game to 6-3. A strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the inning.

The bottom of the 8th brought 6 runs, starting when Dispigna knocked it out of the park towards right field for a grand slam that put Tech up 10-3. To get in this position, Finley had doubled, down the left field line, Jackson singled to left field, and Tyler Hare walked. The bases loaded up again after this, and Romano and Finley both picked up an RBI to essentially seal the game.

Offensively, Tech came out of this game with 13 hits, 3 home runs, only 7 strikeouts, 8 runners left on base, and an overall batting average of .371.

Left-handed pitcher Dalton Smith closed out the ninth inning with 1 hit, 1 strikeout, and 11 strikes in 17 pitches after facing 4 batters. Being up 12-3 by this point, it would have been extremely difficult to mess this game up, so Smith closed out well to put a bow on the 12-3 win.

Georgia Tech and Tennessee Tech face off two more times this weekend with the first pitch at 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
