Meet the coaches

  • Tom Izzo, Michigan State: In his 28th season at Michigan State, Izzo is 682–277 overall and 330–159 in Big Ten play. After missing the NCAA Tournament in his first two seasons, Izzo and the Spartans have qualified for the last 24 NCAA Tournaments. Izzo won the National Championship in 2000 and has taken the Spartans to eight Final Fours with 10 Big Ten regular season titles. He was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. Before earning the head coaching position in 1995, Izzo was an assistant coach at Michigan State from 1983-95 under Jud Heathcote. Izzo began his coaching career in 1977 at Ishpeming High School before serving as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan, his alma mater, from 1979-83.
  • Mike Woodson, Indiana: In his second season at Indiana, Woodson holds a 40-22 overall record and a 19-17 mark in regular season Big Ten play. Woodson has NBA head coaching experience with the Atlanta Hawks from 2004-10 and the New York Knicks from 2012-14. Dating back to 1996, Woodson has also been an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers. Woodson played at Indiana University from 1976-80, and was named the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player as a senior under coach Bob Knight. He was the 12th overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft, and played for various teams from 1980-91, averaging 14 points over 786 games.

Three things to watch in Indiana vs. Michigan State

1. Malik Hall's return

Michigan State senior forward Malik Hall didn't play in the first matchup against Indiana due to injury, but he plays an important role in a variety of ways. The 6-foot-7 Hall is averaging a career-high 9.1 points with 4.4 rebounds. He shoots 41.4 percent from 3-point range and is arguably Michigan State's best defender. Last season, Hall scored 18 points in a 15-point win over Indiana, and he's coming off a 14-point game against Michigan on Saturday.

2. Hood-Schifino versus veteran guards

Spartan guards Tyson Walker and A.J. Hoggard have played a combined 200 college basketball games in their careers. With Walker's 39.8 percent 3-point shooting and Hoggard's 5.8 assists per game, the duo gives Michigan State two playmakers in the backcourt. On the other sideline, Jalen Hood-Schifino has stepped up in impressive fashion, running the Indiana offense without Xavier Johnson, who broke his foot on Dec. 17. Hood-Schifino has had turnover and shooting struggles at times on the road, but he's also made clutch plays to beat Purdue and Illinois this season.

3. Any solution for Jackson-Davis?

In the long list of standout performances from Trayce Jackson-Davis this season, his game against Michigan State on Jan. 22 is near the top. With 35 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists, Jackson-Davis flat out dominated whoever Michigan State threw at him. The Spartans' double-teams didn't slow Jackson-Davis down, and it also allowed for open looks from Trey Galloway and Tamar Bates, who combined to shoot 8-for-9 from 3-point range. Hall's return could help, but it'll be all hands on deck with Mady Sissoko, Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper battling Jackson-Davis in the paint.
