Indiana Freshman Jalen Hood-Schifino Sweeps Weekly Big Ten Awards

Indiana freshman point guard Jalen Hood-Schifino was named Big Ten Freshman and Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

After leading Indiana to a season sweep of Purdue, Jalen Hood-Schifino swept the Big Ten's weekly awards.

On Monday, the league named Hood-Schifino Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week. He's the first player to earn both awards since Illinois' Kofi Cockburn in 2019.

Indiana's freshman point guard had one of the most impressive performances of the college basketball season on Saturday, scoring 35 points at Mackey Arena in Indiana's 79-71 win over No. 5 Purdue.

Hood-Schifino made 14-of-24 field goals and 1-of-2 3-point attempts against Purdue to set a new career-high scoring total. He was one point shy of the Indiana freshman scoring record, set by Jay Edwards on March 10, 1988 against Minnesota.

With this win, Indiana moved up to No. 15 in the AP top-25 poll and joined the conversation as a Final Four contender.

"I live for those moments," Hood-Schifino said. "I love playing in big games ... Coming to Indiana, you know the Indiana versus Purdue rivalry and everything, so I knew if I have a big-time game I can go down as one of the big-time Indiana players. So it was definitely great to have a performance like I did and for us to get a win."

Despite Indiana's 80-65 loss at Michigan State on Tuesday, Hood-Schifino scored 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting with three rebonds, one assist, one steal and one turnover.

This is Hood-Schifino's fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, tying Ohio State's Brice Sensabaugh for most this season. Hood-Schifino is now averaging 13.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists on 42.6 percent shooting.

The Hoosiers conclude their 2022-23 Big Ten regular season schedule this week with a pair of home games. The Iowa Hawkeyes come to Assembly Hall on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff, followed by a matchup against Michigan on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET for senior night.
