Indiana Guard Tamar Bates Enters Transfer Portal

Indiana sophomore guard Tamar Bates entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. He averaged 6.1 points and shot 37.4 percent from 3-point range.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Tamar Bates entered the transfer portal on Tuesday following his sophomore season at Indiana.

The 6-foot-5, 193-pound guard averaged 6.1 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists and shot 37.4 percent from three as a sophomore. He made two starts and came off the bench in 33 games for Indiana in 2022-23, playing 20.4 minutes per game. As a freshman, Bates played 14.5 minutes in 32 games off the bench, averaging 3.9 points with a 29.8 3-point shooting percentage. 

Bates came to Indiana as a four-star recruit, ranked No. 30 in the class of 2021. Originally from Kansas City, Bates attended Piper High School before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. for his senior year.

He was originally committed to Texas, but de-committed when coach Shaka Smart left Texas to take over at Marquette. Bates was Mike Woodson's first recruit, committing to Indiana less than a month after Woodson became head coach..
