Here's What Trey Galloway Said After Indiana's Loss At Michigan State

Trey Galloway scored 11 points on 3-for-5 3-point shooting on Tuesday night, but Indiana lost 80-65 at Michigan State. Here's what Galloway said after the game, with video attached.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Indiana suffered an 80-65 loss at Michigan State on Tuesday, dropping to 19-9 overall and 10-7 in Big Ten play.

Trayce Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers with 19 points and seven rebounds, followed by Jalen Hood-Schifino with 16 and Trey Galloway with 11.

Here's what Galloway said after the game.

QUESTION: Trey, there were rebounding issues, there were other issues. What did you feel was the biggest difference tonight?

GALLOWAY: Yeah, like you said the rebounding. They out-rebounded us, and I know when they’re at home and they out-rebound their opponents, they win. So I think we just got out-toughed for the most part. We played pretty solid for the first couple of minutes, then after that they just took it to another gear. Like I said, just got out-toughed. So we’ve got to fix some things up and got to get a win on the road.

Q: Were you guys over-helping on some of those threes that they made? What was your diagnosis on why they got hot from three?

GALLOWAY: Yeah, I just think being in the right positions on defense, we weren’t in at times. So I think just being in those right positions and staying disciplined to our game plan and our defense, we didn’t do that. So I think that’s the reason we gave up so many threes, and it killed us.

Q: Trey, Woody talks about the defense and sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not. What are you guys going to have to do to make it more consistent, especially now that we’re toward the end of the season and heading into the tournament?

GALLOWAY: Yeah, I mean like I said just go back to the things we’ve been good at. We’ve showed spurts of playing great defense. So I just think going back and finding the ways that we were able to get stops previously. So I just think going back and doing the right things on defense.

Q: Particularly 3-point defense, this was the first time since Penn State on Jan. 11 I think you gave up double-digit threes. What has been working that you feel just wasn’t connected tonight?

GALLOWAY: I’d say just like I said, following our game plan. I don’t think we were kind of over-helping on the drives a little bit, getting out, closing out. I know Walker really killed us early in the first half. I think he had three or four in the first half, but I think just closing out with a hand, running them off the line, we didn’t do a good job of that tonight.

Q: Offensively in your losses you guys are very heavily dependent on Trayce and Jalen Hood-Schifino. What do you guys need to do to get a little more offense out of everybody else?

GALLOWAY: I think just kind of flowing more. I think we kind of get stagnant a little bit. Those guys are great players and can really score offensively. The rest of the guys just got to pick it up a little bit and help out.

Q: Trey, you guys were up 22-13 with six minutes to go when Jalen sat down and they made that big run at the run. How frustrating is it to play that well for 14 minutes and see it all go away that quick?

GALLOWAY: It’s frustrating. We got off to a good start and we kind of just fell apart defensively a little bit there and the big thing was the rebounds and the second-chance points. That’s what killed us at it showed.

Q: How much on the road when you have to defend long possessions like that and they get a couple threes like that, how much does that take out of you when you’re trying to maintain what you had?

GALLOWAY: Yeah, those are backbreakers. I mean, just giving up those rebounds or kick outs for threes or late switches or guys just getting clipped and then downhill rebounds and finishes, it hurts. It’s hard to comeback from that because you’re cutting it. I think we cut the lead, I don’t know what it was in the second half what we cut it to, but I know we got it down in single digits. So I think just keep cutting that lead and finding ways to keep getting stops and getting those rebounds is the biggest thing if you guys want to win on the road.

Q: Trey, you’re an Indiana kid. Obviously you’ve got Purdue coming up, and the Indiana-Purdue rivalry is great and you beat them in Bloomington. What do you have to do this time again to do that same thing?

GALLOWAY: I think just play real hard. We can’t get out-toughed. I think that’s the biggest thing for us. We’ve been getting out-toughed when we get on the road. So I think just bringing that same intensity we have at home on the road and being tough for 40 minutes. That’s what it’s going to take because they’re a really good team, but we’re a good team also. So I think if we just stick to our game plan and we go in there and fight, I think we’ve got a good chance.
