Jayhawks make a jump, lead Big 12 contingent in both polls
The Kansas Jayhawks got two huge victories this week to solidify their spot at the top of the conference, avoiding the upsets that seemed to ran rampant through the rest of the sport. And they were rewarded by moving up in the polls ahead of tonight's Big Monday matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs. This week, they came in at 3rd in the AP Poll and 4th in the Coaches Poll.
Purdue took another upset loss at the hands of Maryland, Alabama lost to Tennessee, and then Tennessee lost big to Kentucky to shake up the poll. Houston moved up to the top spot, with Alabama sliding down to the second spot. Kansas split the third spot with UCLA, while Purdue, Virginia, Arizona and Texas followed in both polls. The top ten was rounded out by Baylor and Marquette, with the Bears ninth in the AP Poll and the Golden Eagles ninth in the Coaches Poll.
The Big 12 had three other teams in the polls this week. Kansas State fell 2 spots to 14th in the AP Poll and 16th in the Coaches Poll. Iowa State fell 4 spots to 23rd in the AP Poll and 3 spots to 21st in the Coaches Poll. TCU fell 2 spots to 24th in the AP Poll and fell out of the Coaches Poll entirely, although they are the team receiving the most votes outside of the poll. Other Big 12 teams getting votes include Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
The games between two ranked teams really pick up this week, as Kansas faces TCU tonight. On Tuesday, Baylor travels to Kansas State while #11 Tennessee goes to #25 Texas A&M, Iowa State visits Austin to take on Texas and Marquette heads to #19 Creighton. Wednesday sees #20 Providence travel to #18 UConn. And Saturday wraps it up with Texas going to Waco to take on Baylor, #17 Indiana traveling to Purdue and #15 Saint Mary's going to Spokane for a chance to wrap up the WCC regular season title against #12 Gonzaga.
