Jayhawks start hot, roll to huge victory in season opener.

It was a full team effort as every Kansas player scored in a 40+ point win.

Apparently there was just something in the atmosphere of Allen Fieldhouse, as the Kansas Jayhawks picked up right where their male counterparts left off. The Kansas women started out blistering hot from beyond the arc, building a huge lead throughout the night that kept growing until the final whistle.

Kansas super-senior Holly Kersgieter and senior Wyvette Mayberry led the team with 17 points each on a combined 9-14 from beyond the arc. Center Taiyanna Jackson kicked off the season with another double-double, tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with her 5 blocks. And they got started early, with a combined 22 points in the first quarter alone.

But it wasn't just the returning players that got going in the game. Freshman S'mya Nichols shook off some early jitters, finishing with a balanced score line of 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Senior transfer Ryan Cobbins, who came to the Jayhawks after three years at North Dakota State and one year at Alabama, notched 10 points and 9 rebounds. North Alabama transfer Skyler Gill saw significant minutes, scoring 5 points to go with her 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

The only thing to spoil the evening for the home team was an ankle injury to sophomore Zsofia Telegdy, who came down on the ankle of an opposing player while going for a rebound. Her status for upcoming games is uncertain.

The Jayhawks have high hopes coming into the season, looking to improve on last season, when they started 10-0 in the nonconference schedule before losing in triple overtime in their non-conference finale. Kansas is back in action on Monday, November 13th as they head on the road to play Penn State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5pm Central and the game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
