Kansas at Kansas State Basketball Predictions: No Let Down Here

With the Jayhawks back on the perch, can they avoid being knocked down by the Wildcats tonight?

The Kansas Jayhawks are back in the lead for the regular season Big 12 title, and their reward is a trip across the state to Manhattan. The Kansas State Wildcats are desperate for a win to get back on track, and they would love to have that come against their biggest rival.

But after the way that Kansas shut down Houston, is there any real worry that Kansas is going to drop a letdown game? Will the demolition of an Oklahoma State team that just beat the Wildcats be enough of a confidence booster to make this a simple night? Or will the rivalry win again and turn this into an ugly back and forth that leaves no one happy?

Those K-State fans who happen to be Kansas City Chiefs fans are some lucky devils. They get two Super Bowls in a week. Kansas travels to Manhattan on a high of beating Houston, but they should be wary of the Wildcats because this is the game everyone in the Little Apple has had marked on their calendars for some time and the place will be juiced. I can already hear the obscene chants. And the actual basketball team will be fired up too after a disappointing loss to Oklahoma State over the weekend. Cam Carter is a versatile guard that can score and assist and Arthur Kaluma grabs over seven boards per game. Tylor Perry leads the team in assists and Dajuan Harris’s wingspan could stifle the senior guard and be a major factor. If KU can limit those three players or even just let them get theirs and stop the rest of the team, they should win the game. I’ll take Kansas to make a bad week worse in Manhattan.

It should be a raucous environment for this game, which is what you hope for in a rivalry matchup and it’s what always happens when KU heads west. I’m a bit torn here; on one hand, KU is a decidedly better team than K-State and I think that gap is growing. Then again, this is the biggest game of the year for the purple team and its fans. I think this will be a bit of a struggle, but in the end Kansas will come out victorious. There’s too much firepower for the Jayhawks and too much instability for the Wildcats for me to feel differently. K-State’s got some nice pieces, but I don’t think they’re reliable right now and I like KU’s best far better. The ‘Cats will probably make it closer than we expect, but the Jayhawks should be able to handle their business.

It has been a disastrous two-week period for the Kansas State Wildcats, as the thinly veiled allegations of cheating they levied at Iowa State leaked in a less than flattering way, and the team has lost four straight now, including a very bad loss on the road to Oklahoma State. For every problem the Jayhawks might have, the Wildcats have it much worse. And if you think Kansas has a turnover problem, take a look at Kansas State, who is one of the 20 worst teams in the nation. They take a bunch of threes but shoot horribly on them, they struggle against interior challenges, and they are only mediocre at getting to the line. The ONLY thing they have going for them is their defense, turning stops into scoring opportunities. I expect Kansas to be able to limit the turnovers and land the knockout punch on the Wildcats tonight.
