Kansas Basketball at West Virginia Predictions: So Easy It's Hard

The Jayhawks head to Morgantown to try and avoid being upset by the Mountaineers.

The Kansas Jayhawks are on a roll again, with two impressive wins after their surprising road loss. The next game is in one of the most unpredictable venues for Kansas, as they head to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers are pretty clearly the worst team in the conference, but they just pulled off an upset of the Texas Longhorns last weekend. Can the Jayhawks avoid being the second victim in as many weeks?

It’s going to be weird going to West Virginia and not seeing Bob Huggins sitting on his familiar stool on the Mountaineer bench. WVU has gone 6-11 to start the season and really the only bright spot was their conference win against Texas. Like Kansas, the Mountaineers rely heavily on three or four players carrying the scoring load each game. Unlike Kansas, those players don’t shoot the ball particularly well and as a team, West Virginia shoots only 30% from deep. They’ll need to massively up their averages to beat a Kansas team that appears to be finding itself. I don’t see that happening and even though KU has historically struggled in Morgantown, I’ll take KU rather easily in this one.

I can’t take any road game for granted in the Big 12 after what happened just over a week ago in Orlando, but I do like this matchup for Kansas, even if it comes in a building that has given the Jayhawks some trouble over the years. It feels like we’re primed for a Hunter Dickinson podium game (again) with West Virginia still missing Jesse Edwards. I assume WVU will try to take him out of the game as much as possible, but without their star big man that will be far easier said than done. Dickinson’s presence should be enough to push Kansas to victory. And I’ll call a shot here, too: Against the team with the 235th-best three-point defense in America, KU will look respectable from long range. Nick Timberlake, come on down.

Every time I expect the Jayhawks to blow out the Mountaineers I end up sweating the end of the game. But every time I brace myself for a tight result, Kansas absolutely destroys them. But I have no clue how much of that is Bob Huggins and how much is just Morgantown.  West Virginia is BAD, and I think their upset of Texas tells me a lot more about Texas than it does about West Virginia. Kansas should roll in this one, so be ready to start swearing at your TV screen.
