It didn't take long for the Kansas Jayhawks to get their first batch of recognition from around the conference, as yesterday freshman Gradey Dick was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on the men's side. It was the first individual player award of the season for the Jayhawks and the first of Dick's career.

The honor came after two double digit scoring efforts last week. First Dick scored 14 points, including a run of seven straight points in the final two and a half minutes of the game, in a 69-64 win over the Duke Blue Devils. He followed that up with an 18 point effort against Southern Utah, including shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc, and totaling six rebounds and three assists, both of which match his career highs.

This award comes a week after Jalen Wilson and Kevin McCullar were named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List

Dick was joined in being honored this week by Baylor's LJ Cryer, marking the second time in two weeks that a Baylor player has won the Big 12 Player of the Week award this season.  Kansas State's Keyontae Johnson won the Newcomer of the Week award for Week 1.

Given the way that the Jayhawks have started the season, it is reasonable to expect that we will see multiple honors for the Jayhawks over the course of the year, especially for Jalen Wilson, who has already hit career highs in points scored with his 25-point performance against Duke and his 33-point performance against Southern Utah on Friday.

Kansas has three games this week in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, starting Wednesday. A strong showing could lead to back-to-back weeks with a Jayhawk being recognized by the conference.
