Kansas Jayhawks drop in AP Poll, stay fifth in Coaches Poll

The voters broke last week's tie, but Kansas has a big test tomorrow.

The first week of the regular season is in the books, and every team that appeared in the preseason versions of the AP Poll and Coaches Poll have played two games, against varying levels of competition.

It's really early in the season, so the rankings right now don't REALLY matter, but they do give us something to talk about, and they are a point of pride for a lot of fans. They also give us an indication of how good teams are considered to be this early in the season.

Last week, the Jayhawks were ranked fifth in both polls, including sharing the fifth spot with Baylor in the AP Poll. This week, the voters broke that tie, pushing the Bears ahead by a decent margin. The Jayhawks barely held off the Duke Blue Devils for the sixth spot.

The top 4 is the same in both polls, with North Carolina, Gonzaga, Houston and Kentucky in the top four spots. The same ten teams are in the top 10 in both polls, but each pair is flipped the rest of the way down, with Baylor, Duke and Arkansas fifth, seventh and ninth, respectively, in the AP Top 25, and Kansas, UCLA and Creighton those same spots in the Coaches Poll.

Other Big 12 teams joining the Jayhawks and Bears in the Top 25 are Texas (11 in AP, 11 in Coaches), TCU (15, 18) and Texas Tech (23, 22).

There are a bunch of matchups this week between two teams ranked in the Top 25. #6/#5 Kansas plays #7/#8 Duke in the late game of the Champions Classic on Tuesday. #2 Gonzaga travels to Austin to take on #11 Texas on Wednesday night. On Friday the Main Event tournament kicks off in Las Vegas with two games: #16/#14 Virginia vs #5/#6 Baylor  and #19/#20 Illinois vs #8/#7 UCLA. The championship and consolation game will both be played on Sunday. Also on Sunday, #4 Kentucky travels to Spokane to take on #2 Gonzaga.
